Root canal treatment (Endodontics)

Root canal treatment is a specialized endodontic procedure aimed at saving a tooth with damaged or infected pulp. It is a key alternative to extraction, allowing the natural tooth to be preserved while maintaining its long-term function and stability.

Indications for endodontic treatment

Root canal treatment becomes necessary when harmful bacteria penetrate the deeper structures of the tooth. The main conditions requiring this treatment include:

  • Deep tooth decay that has reached the dental pulp.
  • Pulpitis (acute or chronic inflammation of the dental pulp, often accompanied by intense and persistent pain)
  • Periodontitis (an inflammatory process affecting the tissues surrounding the tooth root)
  • Traumatic dental injuries that cause damage to the pulp, even in the absence of visible fractures or other external damage.

Stages of the treatment process

The procedure requires a high level of precision and is carried out in several sequential steps to ensure complete elimination of the infection:

  • Local anesthesia: ensures complete pain relief and patient comfort throughout the procedure.
  • Cleaning and disinfection: the damaged pulp is removed, and the root canals are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected using specialized instruments and antiseptic solutions.
  • Hermetic sealing: the treated root canals are sealed with biocompatible materials to prevent bacteria from re-entering.
  • Tooth restoration: the final stage involves placing a permanent filling or crown to restore the tooth’s strength and function.

Specialized techniques and root canal retreatment

Treatment under a dental operating microscope

The use of a dental operating microscope provides enhanced precision, allowing the dentist to visualize and treat anatomically complex and microscopic root canals. This significantly improves the chances of successful treatment.

Root canal retreatment (revision)

In cases of reinfection, incompletely filled root canals, or inflammatory changes in the bone around the root tip, root canal retreatment may be necessary. The procedure involves removing the existing filling material, thoroughly disinfecting the canals, and resealing them to prevent further bacterial infiltration.

Recovery period and normal post-treatment reactions

After completing the endodontic procedure, it is normal to experience temporary discomfort or sensitivity when biting or chewing. Within moderate limits, this is a normal response of the surrounding tissues to the treatment and usually subsides gradually within two to three days. Full recovery typically occurs within one to two weeks.

Recommendations for managing discomfort

To ensure a quick and comfortable recovery, the following measures are recommended:

  • Take pain relievers or anti-inflammatory medication as prescribed by your dentist, with antibiotic therapy when indicated for a significant infection.
  • Apply a cold compress to the treated area for 15–20 minutes to help reduce swelling.
  • Avoid eating hard, very hot, or excessively cold foods on the treated tooth during the first few days after the procedure.

Signs that require a dental consultation

Although mild discomfort is expected, you should contact your dentist promptly if you experience any of the following symptoms: increasing pain after the third day, significant swelling of the face or gums, a body temperature above 38°C, or pus discharge.
