Periodontology

What is Periodontology?

Periodontology is a specialized field of dentistry focused on the health of the gums and the periodontal tissues that support the teeth. Periodontal diseases affect the gums, bone, and supporting ligaments that hold the teeth in place and can lead to tooth loss if left untreated. Periodontology involves the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of these conditions.

What are periodontal diseases?

Periodontal diseases are infections and inflammatory conditions that affect the supporting structures of the teeth. Without timely treatment, they can progress from superficial gum inflammation to damage of the supporting jawbone.

Symptoms of periodontal disease

  • Red, swollen, or bleeding gums
  • Persistent bad breath despite good oral hygiene
  • Gum recession (receding gums)
  • Loose or shifting teeth
  • Sensitivity when chewing or pain in the gums.

Common periodontal procedures

Curettage (deep gum cleaning)

This procedure is used in more advanced cases of periodontitis. Curettage involves deep cleaning beneath the gums to remove bacteria and infected tissue from periodontal pockets. This helps promote healing of the affected tissues and improve gum health.

Laser therapy

Lasers are used in periodontology to provide precise, minimally invasive treatment for gum inflammation and infection. Laser therapy can help reduce bleeding, discomfort, and recovery time compared with traditional methods.

Periodontal surgery

In more advanced cases of periodontitis, surgical intervention may be necessary to restore damaged gum tissue and supporting bone. These procedures may include:

Periodontal flap surgery

During this procedure, the gums are gently lifted to allow thorough cleaning of deep periodontal pockets and removal of infected tissue. The gums are then repositioned and sutured back into place.

Bone grafting

If the bone surrounding the teeth has been significantly damaged by periodontal disease, a bone graft may be recommended to help restore the jawbone structure and prevent further tooth loss.

Soft tissue grafting

In cases of gum recession, soft tissue from another area of the mouth may be used to restore lost gum tissue and protect the exposed tooth root.

Maintenance therapy

Following successful treatment of periodontal disease, patients should attend regular dental check-ups and professional cleanings every 3–6 months to help prevent recurrence.

What is the importance of periodontology?

Periodontal diseases not only affect the health of the gums and teeth but may also have implications for overall health. Studies suggest that untreated periodontal infections may be associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke, and certain pregnancy complications.

How to prevent periodontal disease?

Prevention is key to maintaining healthy gums and reducing the risk of periodontal disease. Good daily oral hygiene and regular dental visits can help protect your gums and maintain long-term oral health. Here are some tips for preventing periodontal problems:

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste.
  • Use dental floss or interdental brushes to clean between your teeth.
  • Visit your dentist regularly for routine check-ups and professional dental cleanings.
  • Limit smoking, which is one of the main risk factors for developing periodontal disease.
